“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
–Henry David Thoreau
It would have to be an early morning walk…
On a dirt or gravel road, taking me back to a sweeter time..
It would have to be sheltered by trees whose lacy canopies filter the misty sunlight, creating fluid patterns of delight in the breeze.
It would need to be a cool morning, so that I’d be revived, renewed by the crispness of it.
And I’d know the piercing beauty of a birdsong, a song only God could have written.
I might startle the dainty deer in her own private world
Or be scolded by a bushy tailed squirrel amidst his morning foray for nuts.
I might find some roadside flowers to admire..
But I wouldn’t pick them because their beauty would be lost to the next passerby who needed to see them…
This would have to be a walk with the Lord Jesus by my side ~ the Lover of my soul, my forever Companion.
Sometimes we’d stroll in hushed silence.
And then He and I together would admire the majestic work of His precious, scarred hands.
He’d again remind me that His perfect plan for me was unfolding just as He desired, and He would reinforce the song in my heart, the indescribable joy within my soul.
He’d remind me that I would someday be spending eternity with Him in heaven.Oh, I could stay with Him on that little country road forever.
We’d share reminiscences about my loved ones who’ve already joined Him in heaven,
‘Cause I know He’s welcomed them
To rejoice with angels ’round His kingly throne.
I have a suspicion there’s a country road in heaven. And everything that comes with it will be mine in eternity.
“Oh God, give us eyes to see, and ears to hear. One lifetime is not long enough to drink in all the loveliness of Your creation.”
