“Lord, You knit me together in my mother’s womb; Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:13, 16
As Christians, we know with certainty that nothing in our lives happens by chance; God’s plan for us was set before we were even born! And the daily Christian walk is never ordinary! Every morning brings new adventures in growth as we seek His face and pursue holiness. And every moment of every day we’re blessed to live in a world so glorious, so magnificent, so enjoyable! Let’s not forget that when God created the heavens and the earth, He created all for our pleasure! Not only so, but He established them as a sign of His faithfulness, His enduring love throughout eternity.
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with Whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.”
James 1:17
All of my life I’ve had a special affinity for the moon. I can’t tell you why, but its magnificent beauty ~ its reassuring soft glow, constantly changing nuances of light and color among the clouds ~ have especially fascinated me. A night light in the sky!
“My covenant I will not violate, Nor will I alter the utterance of My lips…It shall be established forever like the moon, And the witness in the sky is faithful.”
Psalm 89:34,37
So I drive hubby to work every morning, about eighty miles round trip. Of course, the trip to his office goes quickly, because we chat and listen to the radio. Once I drop him off, I get back onto the beltway, drive over the high and scary ship channel bridge, and head home. Hubby calls this bridge “Mount Houston” ~ the highest point in Houston.
This last part of the trip always promised to be longer than the first part because I was alone on this dark stretch of road. I prayed, just as I always do ~ for family, for safety, for hubby to have a good day at work, and that God would be glorified in our lives.
My Silvery Dimple in the Sky |
And suddenly there it was! On the very first day that I made this return drive, I noticed right away that the moon was to my left, perfectly viewed from the driver’s side of the car. And with few exceptions, the sky has been quite clear every morning, affording a magnificent vista of velvety sky decorated by one silvery dimple of a merry traveling companion.
The moon literally sails along with me! Through curves and turns, up and down the overpasses, following the highway, passing the school in my neighborhood. And when I finally arrive at the last stop sign to turn onto my own street, guess what is right in front of me? My stunning, merry companion ~ present reminder that God is watching over me.
Friends, I wanted to share this with you, because I know that God has given me my silvery travel companion as a constant reminder of His watch care over me. He knows me ~ and you ~ down to the last finite detail. And He gives us all exactly what we need, when we need it!
Never fear, dear one, that He has abandoned you when the road is long, dark and lonely. God is near! He is watching, He is listening, and He will meet your every need. He’ll fulfill the desires of your heart, if you will simply trust and obey.
“Lord, I pray today for all of us who travel dark and lonely roads. I pray that You will continue to reveal Yourself to us in brilliant and mysterious ways, as only You can! Thank you for the moon, Your expression of love that follows me home. Thank you for reassuring us that as Your children we will are never alone in the dark!”

THE MOON’S THE NORTH WIND’S COOKY
He bites it, day by day,
Until there’s but a rim of scraps
That crumble all away.
The South Wind is a baker.
He kneads clouds in his den,
And bakes a crisp new moon that . . . greedy
North . . . Wind . . . eats . . . again!
