When I was growing up, it was my privilege to live near my grandparents. In fact, during my last semester of college, I lived WITH my grandparents. They were exemplary Christians and the grandparents that every child deserves. My grandfather, in particular, was a genuine servant of Christ and daily demonstrated a servant’s heart in every aspect of his life. He was simply a very holy man.
I well remember my grandfather’s hands. They were quite pale and thin, with noticeably blue veins ~ and they were always busy cooking and serving scrumptious meals to friends and family. He was the one who made coffee every morning; how I loved that aroma wafting upstairs to my room, wooing me out of bed at 5 a.m….
What a gift he was! As a young man he had become a successful restaurant owner, as well as an outstanding chef. When I was in my last year of college, he would send me to school with a sack lunch containing a gourmet egg and olive salad sandwich. He was a master of fried chicken and chicken fried steak, which he often lovingly prepared for us. Our holiday meals were incomparable~ everything from baskets made from oranges and stuffed with sweet potatoes ~ to home made lemon meringue pies…
After my grandfather went home to be with the Lord, I had a very vivid dream about him. He was in his kitchen, of course. And as he walked over to the table to serve something magnificent, his hands glowed ~ bright, radiant, and beautiful. I can’t help thinking that when he arrived in Heaven the Lord was especially happy to take his hands and say, “Well, done, thou good and faithful servant!”
Lord Jesus, help me to always remember my grandfather’s sweet spirit and servant’s heart. Thank you for cherished memories that never fade. May I strive to emulate his example as I seek to be a better servant. Help me to remember that You have called me to serve with faithfulness, obedience, and humility.
At my Mom’s 90th we gave out a poem….
My hands have grown older through the years,
And they have wiped away many tears.
They held you when you were young,
And wiped a tear to keep you strong.
So hang this on your wall to view,
Remember that I will always love you!
Seemed kinda appropriate for your grandfather too! Love ya, Evelyn
Thanks so much, Ev. Those hands! How we loved them! I remember your mom’s as well….
